The Great Escape 2019 Festival - 23 Irish Artists to See at the Brighton, England Event.

Thursday 9th, 2019

The annual showcase festival kicks off today and 23 acts from across Ireland will perform 40 shows throughout the 3-day music festival.

This year's festival is bigger than ever, with just about every single spare room in Brighton set to be turned into an ad hoc venue.

Bitch Falcon

Four years on from an initial explosive emergence, the Dublin-based three-piece haven’t so much discovered their voice as relentlessly refined it. If anything, they relish in sharp declarations, their signature sound always moving forward even when throwing a nod to the past. The aesthetic is raw, even a touch frenzied, yet the chaos is controlled in a ferocious through line that harnesses the strongest elements of rock, grunge, metal, hardcore and melodic electro-pop.

Biig Piig

Jess "Biig Piig" Smyth is an Irish songwriter, vocalist and musician based in Hammersmith, London.

Clara’s genre can be described as acoustic/indie folk in style mixed with haunting vocals and melancholic lyrics.

Classic Yellow

Expect a delightful mix of fuzzy guitars and cheesy ballads, topped off with a pinch of old school psychedelia.

Havvk

Havvk combine an abrasive edge with celestial vocals, to create a driving, expansive sound, with activism at its core.

Inhaler

Meeting at school in 2012, and assuming their current line up in 2016, INHALER is a Dublin four piece rock and roll band. Finally finished school in Summer 2018, the guys spent their time writing and rehearsing and gigging around Ireland. Having completed the Leaving Certificate in June 2018, they continue to fine-tune their live set, and focus on recording and releasing a growing repertoire of their own material. They featured in the line-up for their first festivals (Indiependence and EP) in 2018, and sold out their first headliner in Whelan’s Dublin on Sept 8th. In the final part of 2018, they have supported the Sherlocks, Blossoms, the Coronas, Picturehouse and toured with The Academic.

Joshua Burnside

Northern Irish experimental folk songwriter and producer Joshua Burnside was born in Ireland, but cites the music of Colombia, Eastern Europe and North America as the greatest influences on his unique sound. Deftly blending folk textures and melodies with elements of electronica, he has made it difficult for pundits to put him in a box. Balanced with a diverse palette of sounds, Burnside deftly blends alt-folk and elements of the Irish folk song tradition with South American rhythms and Eastern European influences, whilst introducing synthetic and found-sounds, synths loops and crunching beats to create a stormy world that shifts and swirls perspective like a lingering lucid dream.

Just Mustard

Just Mustard are a 5 piece band from Dundalk, Ireland. Crafting their own unique blend of noise, trip hop and electronic influenced music, they released their debut album ‘Wednesday’ to critical acclaim in 2018 – earning a nomination as album of the year in the 2018 Choice Music Prize.

Kitt Philippa

Kitt Philippa (KP) searches for grace, and the luminous, in words met with music. Although raised on classical, the songs are strangely urban and often conveyed with digital sleight. An organ scholar and an experimentalist, KP plays piano, guitar, clarinet, prayer bowl and bicycle wheel. The songs may often reflect perilous times yet in so doing, KP takes us out of ourselves and into the most rarefied state. On a song like ‘Human’ the listener is being willed to be close, to rediscover that most beautiful denominator.

Kojaque

Dublin rapper Kojaque is an artist steadily gaining ground on the Irish and international music scene, thanks to his production style, stunning visuals, and biting lyrics. Co-founder of independent label Soft Boy Records, Kojaque mixes sampling and jazz beats with dynamic, poetic lyrics, showcasing life as a modern Dubliner.

Sive

Her unique sound weaves together her love for the craft of songwriting with her enthusiasm for experimentation and intricate arrangements.

Talos

Talos is Eoin French, from Cork in Ireland. He makes patient, plaintive electronic pop music. He arrived in late 2014, with the mesmerising ‘Tethered Bones’, the dreamy production proved a perfect platform for French’s powerful voice and rewarding words.

Vulpynes

Don't let looks deceive you, for a 2 piece band Vulpynes make noise. Expect a fusion of heavy and melodic hooks, snarling vocals and a visceral rhythm section.

Vulpynes are raw and energetic garage rock at its finest, yet their infectiously brazen wall of sound remains inimitably their own.

Whenyoung

Whenyoung are Aoife Power (Vocals/ Bass), Niall Burns (Guitar), Andrew Flood (Drums). Their story started in Limerick ... three underage teenagers met for the first time after sneaking into Costello’s Tavern: the only bar in town that floated their musical tastes. After bonding over cheap vodka and the sound of The Velvet Underground, they began playing music together and moved to Dublin to seek some big city excitement. Developing their sound, still with a DIY approach, the band moved to London and last year became whenyoung.

Wild Youth

Wild Youth consists of David Whelan (vocals/guitar), Conor O’Donohoe (keyboard/vocals), Ed Porter (guitar/vocals) and Callum McAdam (drums).

Best friends from childhood Conor and David have always been making music together but it wasn’t until they met Callum and Ed in early 2016 that Wild Youth was born. Aware of each other from many years of playing in different bands they were eventually drawn together by a mutual love of rock and pop in equal measures. Once together, they went straight into the studio and started working on their vision of creating songs that you’ll want to have with you throughout the day; at home, at work, in the club, in the pub.

The Wood Burning Savages

Formed in Derry City, Northern Ireland, The Wood Burning Savages are a fast paced punk rock band who proudly wear the rebel spirit of their hometown on their sleeves.

With pulsating riffs and a sharp political edge, they are often compared to Manic Street Preachers, The Clash and Queens of the Stone Age.
